i enjoyed reading this book so much that it kept me up way past bedtime into the wee small hours this morning as I found it very difficult to put down until I finished it Barbara s writing is good enough to keep a few rather convoluted plot lines moving at a good pace with enough red herrings and twists to keep Inspector Green rather busy especially with the meagre amount of sleep he manages in this investigation For most of the book I wasn t quite sure that I liked Inspector Green much, as a pe [...]
I was looking for another Canadian mystery writer and came across Barbara Fradkin whose first book in the Inspector Green series was written a decade and a half ago I was pleasantly surprised and left wondering why I had not previously encountered this author. This book introduces Homicide Inspector Michael Green A young graduate student is stabbed in a university library and Green is assigned to investigate He brings to light a web of jealousy, competition and ambition amongst the researchers wi [...]
This is the first Fradkin book I ve read and I plan to read Once I became involved in the story it took about 30 pages I read it in two days The last evening, I actually stayed up until 1 00 a.m and read 100 pages straight through I thought the case was well laid out, the characters fleshed out I actually don t like the main character, Green, very much He is self centred and selfish Still, I don t consider that key and he may improve with further books He seemed, at the end of the book, that th [...]
DO OR DIE G Barbara Fradkin 1st in seriesWhen a popular university student from a wealthy family is found stabbed to death in an academic library, tenacious police inspector Michael Green is called in As he sifts through the evidence, several suspects emerge Was the killing a crime of passion and revenge or a consequence of competition and ambition in the cut throat world of university politics Putting his reputation and his rocky marriage on the line, Green is determined to uncover the truth be [...]
I didn t finish this book because the writing was so bad and the storyline so thin that I couldn t bear to read any of it I stuck it out for 1 2 the book a big mistakeI should have realized it wasn t going to get any better after the 50 page rule If you like mysteries, don t read this one
This was well written, marvelous twist and turns I liked that there were multiple plausible murders I liked how the case was solved I was very disappointed in Green s behavior at times, but I guess that makes him human Good read overall.
Goodthis was a.a mystery that had than one murdere suspects of the crimes were many the ending was a surprise.
Great mystery I love that it is based in Ottawa
First book in the series written by Fradkin Was an entertaining read.
Fradkin s first Inspector Green gets the series off to a rollicking start.
Excellent writer Great detective in Inspector Green Multi dimensional.
Fun, straightforward police procedural.
Barbara paints sharp pictures with her words I could easily visualize even hear Inspector Green as if he were in the same room as me An intelligent whodunit
A new author for me but this was a very entertaining first novel If you like books by Peter James and Peter Robinson you will also enjoy this one.
Liked that it is set in Ottawa
Not bad for a police procedural set in Ottawa, but I have to read the next onehe may move to barrhaven
I needed to choose a Barbara Fradkin novel for book club and opted for the first in the Detective Green I am not a fan of the murder mystery genre and less so of police procedurals After reading this, I d suggest that Fradkin has a knack for creating unlikeable characters Detective Green may be good at his job, but is dismissive of his wife and child He seems to be a child himself I have no desire to read another book in the series Those who are fans of the genre may want to invest in of these [...]
First time I have read this author and not disappointed As a Canadian, love finding well written whodunnits based in Canada Also interesting plot Found the inspector to be a realistic character trying to cope with realities of his own weaknesses, family life and politics of his job Enjoy it being based in Ottawa as never been there and interested in learning the tidbits the author writes about the city.
I didn t like inspector green as a person at all.
Read 9 in the series so I wanted to go back to the beginning Some parts were a little slow confusing, but generally I liked the book and realize it was setting up a series.
In Do or Die, by Barbara Fradkin, we meet Inspector Michael Green of the Ottawa Police Department he is known as an excellent detective, one who is able to make intuitive leaps that almost always turn out to be true, but he has been booted upstairs to a supervisory role, which doesn t suit him at all When he is called in to handle a murder inquiry that involves important people at the University of Ottawa, a case that might prove to be very sensitive to certain high ranked individuals in the po [...]
First book I ve read by this author It was good enough to continue to the second in the series Her books are set in Ottawa and surrounding area The familiar places mentioned make the book easy to read.
This book was ok My main criticism is that most of the characters were not likeable The book opened with the whining of one of the characters, and I hoped it wouldn t last long because I hear enough whining from my kids While their fallibility makes them realistic and human than the characters in other books, I read to escape, and I don t particularly want to escape with these people.
I loved this book, and have already bought book two in this series Detective Green is a great detective, but struggles to fulfill his duties as a husband and father This is a solid story with interesting characters A very good whodunit Do or Die left me wanting to read Detective Green stories
A police crime novel involving the investigation into the death of a researcher in Ottawa The struggle to solve the crime leads police detective Green into the competitive world of scientific research where some people are even willing to kill the ones they love to guard their reputations and their funding sources.
I thought this book started very well as a strong police procedural, but by the middle of the book the Inspector began to behave in a very questionable and non professional manner By the end I found the misogyny of the book overwhelming, as every woman was either cold and heartless or a scheming vixen.
I describe this mystery as very linear It was easy to pick up where I left off This is the author s first book, from what I understand, the following ones are much, much better and therefore this and 2 are worth the read to get to 3 and beyond.
Not my favorite style of police procedural Very just the facts to the point it almost read like a movie script instead of a novel Not much time spent on character development or description Nothing wrong with it, just a matter of preference.
A well written mysterious story involving not too many characters Story line was perfect and the plot had the worth The finishing is not thouh the best A definite read from my end to start your reading.
The first Inspector Green police procedural has a satisfyingly complex plot unravelled by a pleasantly imperfect detective.
