Highland Fling is a romance with a twenty years age gap Eve Eddison 26 is an Englishwoman on vacation in the Scottish Highlands, and Moira Burns 46 is a highlander with the complicated past. The writing is solid with good dialogue This is often the main problem for first book authors, but here it is done really well The setting, beautiful Highlands of Scotland, is really interesting and very well described The main characters are well defined, but I found their romance not particularly convincing [...]
3 1 2 Stars I ended up liking this than I thought I would With some of the early reviews quite mixed, I wasn t sure what to expect What I didn t expect was how sad this was I still have a stuffy nose since I could not stop crying in the second half of the book While this book isn t really a happily ever after, at least it is a happily for now, ending I was getting worried there, that s for sure But for me personally, I like books that make me feel While this book was not perfect, it was well wr [...]
Firstly I m Scottish so a Lesbian Romance set in the highlands is like the key to my heart Two of my greatest loves are books and the Scottish Highlands so I felt like this book was a winner for me from the day I read the synopsis Anna Larner describes the highlands with such beautiful portrayals that it s almost wax poetic I could almost breathe the fresh air that reminds me of the Scottish countryside I m almost booking my ticket home for a visit.Highland Fling is based on two very independent [...]
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.I believe this to be the debut novel for this author There were things about it that were outstanding I enjoyed the setting of the Scottish Highlands very much The descriptive narrative of the surroundings was quite nice The dialogue between the characters was at first a little stilted but got better as the book went on.There was a LOT of angst in this book At times I found it heartbreaking The autho [...]
I really enjoyed the story of Eve, a twenty something librarian who goes on holiday to the Scottish Highlands and falls hard for Moira, the older woman with a few secrets Moira seems reluctant to admit her attraction to Eve, but why Although she came across as grumpy at times I liked Moira I wanted her to be who she really was Eve was caring, emotional and determined There are some powerful scenes between them, sometimes devastating Some beautiful, romantic and passionate encounters as well as a [...]
NetgalleyI m not sure if some of my reaction is first book after great book syndrome, but this one left me rather cold and annoyed. The love interest is rather unlikable and so deep inside her own head stuck with her own issues that I in turn had issues seeing the attraction at all I just wanted to grab Eve and drag her away and push her towards anyone else, literally anyone. The dark secrets were looming heavily in the first half without being revealed A flashback only illuminated parts of it, th [...]
Highland Fling isn t my usual sort of read, but I enjoyed it from the first page. The characters rapidly grew inside my head, and the settings were so well described that strong images were quickly formed Anna Larner obviously knows the Scottish landscape well and her writing captures its beauty. The plot kept me guessing until the final pages, and I found myself rooting for Moira and Eve.Looking forward to reading from this author.
The usual May December romance is made even difficult by differences in generational and familial acceptance The difficulty of societal rejection for being a lesbian can result in a feeling of shame or even internalized homophobia Highland Fling delves into self doubt about whether the woman who is desired finds the feeling mutual and also the limitations and barriers created by past rejection personal and societal Can regret be overcome with courage and love
Good and at times a beautifully touching story of love I really got into the characters given the age gap Wicked humour Low cheese factor Must visit Scotland Would recommend 4.5 5
Self contained older woman with a past Carefree younger woman looking for the one Feisty, straight talking best friend Great dynamics, great chemistry Punchy dialogue, well crafted story Emotional Funny Contemporary A realistic ending.Thumbs up.
Captivating page turner Heartfelt writing, complex lives told with humour and pathos, beautiful scene setting Really enjoyed it Great debut.
On a two week holiday in the Scottish countryside with her family, Eve meets Moira, an older woman Eve is in her 20s, Moira is 46 who has lived in the area all her life and works as a naturalist in the woods While the two are drawn to one another, their connection takes time to develop because Eve is convinced Moira couldn t be interested in her and Moira does not think starting something with Eve is a good idea Once there is a connection, the second half of the book is devoted to learning about [...]
Expected so much This is my first book from Anna Lerner when I read the synopsis I was looking forward to read this specific book However even when the story felt so excited unfortunately didn t meet my expectations It doesn t explain why suddenly all this crazy passion and effort to be with someone who you don t know at all and there is not even a single moment of discussion between these two characters to know better each other A bit flat for me.
I enjoyed Eve s sweet quest for Moira older, brooding Moira has to overcome past regrets past relationship beautifully told and Eve really has to stick in there I adored Roxanne Eve s wise cracking best friend A believable storyline which once it gets going is a gripping and sad funny determined story Somewhere between 4 and 5.
Thank you NetGalley for the preview A cute story, very well written with a solid flow from beginning to end It s so hard to forget a love that has been lost and easy to believe that by that loss, nothing will ever grow again This story walks us through that pain and brings us out the other side to see how nothing is ever truly lost.
Loved it, warmed my heart through and through.
I really enjoyed this book I found it a little slow to get started, but once I got into it, it made me both laugh and cry A good holiday read and a great book group book.
I ve just finished reading Highland Fling what a great read I found it really difficult to put the book down I read it in three days usually a book takes me four weeks or The book has many twists and turns, as well as ups and downs.I really got to know the main characters Eve and Moira and enjoyed getting to know them better and about their lives as I progressed through the book.I also enjoyed being reminded of the beauty and essence of the highlands of Scotland.I am left wondering if the Scot [...]
I have just finished reading this book, what a compelling read, couldnt put it down Beautiful descriptions of the Scottish highlands, combined with the romance between two people who fall in love, even though in the beginning they are unsure of what they really want.
